book cover evaluation

Posted in Uncategorized by kksokker17 on the May 20, 2008

All of the book covers for the book,”Fahrenheit 451,” have images of flames and pages from books.  Also, they all have the title in bold lettering, as well as the authors name. Some of them also have an image of a man. They all have a simular color scheme too.  The colors consist of red, orange, yellow, and brown mostly.  So far my knowledge of the book is that it is about the burning of books, so the cover that appeals to me most so far is the very last one you posted on the bottom of the page.  It shows a man and a dog made of paper it looks like and theres flames.  I like this one because it is very creative how they used paper to create a man and dog.

Naps

The points of the authors arguement are:

  • americans are too busy
  • americans feel the need to stay busy
  • americans are afraid to sleep because they have to much stress to worry about.

The author starts by talking about customs of napping in other countries.  Next, she relates them to america and talks about what it would be like if americans started doing what the other countries did. She did a good job at organizing her arguement.  She started by giving an example then taking pieces from that to discuss.

I agree with her because i think if Americans took small like 15 minutes naps each day we would all have more energy and we would be happier.

Food Fight

Definition of anthropomorphized:  to ascribe human form or attributes to an animal, plant, material object, etc.

2. The humans are shown as being evil, and they dont seem to care that they are hurting a living thing.

4. Frames one and four come together because they are showing the same things happening to humans that we did to the food.

5. I think the author might be trying to use the guilt factor to get us to think about what we do to our food.

6. The tone is almost a joking one, but its almost one of anger.  The author wants us to think about what he has said and shown.

Assertion Journal: The Angel in the House

Posted in Uncategorized by kksokker17 on the May 6, 2008

The angel in the house is dead and no longer lives in the imaginations of either women or men.

When writing on a topic or subject most writers take into account what kind of audience they are aiming for.  Some writers dont care though.  They write for themselves and dont worry about how it will effect anyone.  In the past women didnt have as many rights as men, so, when writing they had to becareful with their choice of words and topic. They also had to keep in mind what kind of outcome would come from their writing.  The angel in the house is talking about how when those women were writing they constantly had that in the back of their minds.  However, times have changed and men and women are practically equal in their rights.

Both men and women can vote, have jobs, and have freedom of speech.  Although we have that freedom of speech it doesnt mean we can talk about anything and not have to worry about offending anyone.  Both men and women now a days stilll have to choose their topics and words wisely.

Virginia Woolf Questions

3. She said that because when people write they should only be focusing on the task at hand, which is what they’re writing about. Being unconscious is to be unaware of your surroundings.  So, writers should tune out the things around them when they’re writing.  Yes, i agree. Writers should try to stay in an imaginary mindset while writing their story. Also, writers should stay unconscious when writing because it would help them focus on what the reader wants.

4. When Woolf is talking about the angel being in her house she is talking about how in her writing she needs to be careful not to offend the men because she is a womens writer.

9. In Woolf’s analogy she is saying that writers that are women use more imagination in their work. But, then she thought about herself.  This was to show that in jobs women usually dont stand up to men because they feel like it would offend them.

2.  In paragraph 17, Csikszentmihalyi says,”It is also important to realize that consciousness has its own specific reality, which is immediately destroyed when one begins to analyze it in terms appropriate to less complex systems.” How does he back up this statement? Explain.

3. In paragraph 10, Csikszentmihalyi talks about genetic manipulation. What kind of a tone do you think he was trying to set while talking about this subject.

4. Identify the relationship at the end of paragraph 5. What does the author suggest about this relationship?

5. Why does Csikszentmihalyi refer to Martin E. P. Seligman in paragraph 21? How does this support or strengthen his essay?

Fallacies

1.

Art teacher: Wow, your painting is really good.

Student: You have to say that you’re a teacher.

Art teacher: No, it is good, I put it up in the library for everyone to see.

Student: You only did that to try and make me feel good, that doesnt mean my painting is good.

2. A large scale poll was taken in Washington. It showed that 35% of people spend atleast 2 hours a day watching tv. So from this information we can conclude that 35% of all Americans spend atleast 2 hours a day watching tv.

3. Jimmy asked his mom if he could go to his friends house and his mom said no, because he needs to clean his room first.

Bird and machine rhetoric q’s

1. I think the effect of using imagery before exposition is to real in the reader and give them an image of the topic of the writer.

2. An example of juxtaposition would be when he compares movements of machines to animals. The effect is that he is talking about technology and how we are trying to create new types of robots to duplicate human life.

3. The statements listed help create the tone of the essay because they  make the reader feel like the writer knows what he’s talking about. An example is, “I’ll admit.”

4. The effect of directly addressing the audience in paragraph 4 is to make the reader think about how they see the topic.

5. The pattern of cause and effect is effective because it shows one side of the arguement then he explains his view.  It helps the reader see both sides. Another pattern he could have used would have been Toulmin.

6. The verbs he uses in paragraph 20 help create imagery and give the reader an idea of the situation an feeling in that moment.

7. It is ironic because he was making a cage and already had a caged hawk, and yet he was thinking about the one that had escaped the day before.

8. The effect of going from the present to the past is to give the reader a look into what Eiseley has seen. Paragraph 31 helps the reader see the beauty in birds.

9. The three appeals work together by creating an effective essay.  His appeal to pathos is shown esspecially when he talks about the birds flying over New York and how beautiful it would be.

Bird and machine discussion q’s

Posted in Uncategorized by kksokker17 on the April 22, 2008

1. I would have to read something about new technology or a major advancement.  Such as, a cure for cancer, or that we landed on mars and it is a stable place that humans could enventually live on.

2. It is reciprocal because it is talking about how science and nature are coming together to restock the zoo.

3. I think that the sight of birds taking over New York would be shocking. Eiseley found it beautiful because he sees that animals were once the rulers. On the issue of the Red-Tailed Hawk, I think Eiseley would be very unhappy about the dismantling of their home. He would probably say that they were here on earth first and therefore should not have to choose there home to please the people.

4. An example of an epiphany is when Eiseley says, “Ah, my mind takes up, on the other hand the machine does not bleed, ache, hang for hours in the empty sky in a torment of hope to learn the fate of another machine, nor does it cry out with joy nor dance in the air with the fierce passion of a bird.” Eiseley seems to think that science will never be able to replace humans or duplicate their emotions.

5. The sentence that would serve his purpose would be, “This is the great age, make no mistake about it; the robot has been born somewhat appropriately along with the atom bomb, and the brain they say now is just another type of more complicated feedback system.”

6. Eiseley’s essay shows that even with the advancements being made in science and technology we will never be able to effectivly or properly duplicate the way a human lives.  It also talks about how robots cant have emotion.

Harry Potter

In Nikki Giovanni’s interpretation of Harry Potter she uses elphants to relate to the life of Harry Potter. The essay talked about a little elephant and his rather unfortunate life and relates it to Harry’s simular misfortune .

She began by saying that the movie should have started with big drums being played. She thought it should have been more dramatic. Then she goes on to talk about Harry’s life after school.  That confused me a little bit because I dont see where it ties in.
